Near East University has recently signed a cooperation agreement with ARRIYADA GROUP in association with GSOUR-IWAN EDUCATION COMPANY (One of NEU’s official agent for Middle Eastern countries). The main area of cooperation is implementing NEU’s Postgraduate programs (both Masters and PhD) in Management, Banking and Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration and other similar disciplines in Arabic language in Saudi Arabia.

Head of Department of Neurology of Near East University Hospital Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu, made a statement on the 21st September World Alzheimer’s Day and stated that the Alzheimer’s disease had become a public health matter as it was a disease becoming more and more common due to the aging of the population; such that one in every eight people aged 65; and one in every two people aged over 85 develop the Alzheimer’s disease. She pointed out that World Alzheimer’s day was initiated in 2012 to raise awareness and organise many various activities to challenge the stigma of dementia and September 2018 was the 7th World Alzheimer’s Day. It was stated that forgetfulness was a common complaint at different age groups. As it is the case in other countries, the people who complain about forgetfulness in this country are afraid of developing the Alzheimer’s disease. However, it people must bear in mind that the majority of people with the complaint of forgetfulness have treatable causes of their case. Furthermore, it was expressed that people that are regarded as forgetful must be carefully taken at hand before reaching conclusions. Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu emphasised that the most common complaints were related to memory problems; alongside difficulty in completing familiar tasks such as getting dressed, preparing meals, using tools, and also personality-mood changes, language problems such as speech and understanding speech, not finding his/her way around, asking the same questions repeatedly, not being able to make calculations, withdrawal from work or social activities. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu also pointed out that the presence of a family member who has the disease, or presence of cerebrovascular diseases for risk factors (hypertension, high cholesterol levels, diabetes) frequent brain traumas, low educational level and most important of all, advanced age were the main risk factors of developing the Alzheimer’s disease. In this regard, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu stressed that the most significant risk factor (aging) could not be avoided however, it was possible to control and delay the processes involved at the beginning stage of the disease. She said that keeping an eye on the risk factors involved regarding cerebrovascular diseases helped achieve this. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu: “Neurocognitive Tests which are highly significant in the diagnosis and follow-up on the Alzheimer’s disease were first administered at Near East University Hospital in Northern Cyprus.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu stated that there was a need to have close rapport with the patient’s relative, who will be making observations of the patient during the diagnosis process of the disease. Additionally, she added that the Neurocognitive tests enabled specialists to make evaluations of the patient’s memory, processing abilities, ability to copy shapes and many other functions of the brain. She proudly pointed out that these tests were first done in northern Cyprus at the Near East University Hospital and that with these tests; it was possible to make early diagnosis of the disease and slow down the processes involved. Furthermore, she said that it was highly necessary to check the thyroid hormones and vitamin B 12 levels of each patient. In addition to the above, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amber Eker Bakkaloğlu provided further information regarding the treatment of the Alzheimer’s disease and said that the medication currently used in treatment increased the communication between the nerve cells, alongside increasing the level of hormones which have an impact on memory and slow down the process of brain cell death. Moreover, she explained that the drugs which have been newly developed also stopped the bad proteins from building up in the brain; since they caused the death of cells of the brain.

The Restoration Project of the Ancient Karamanoğlu Turkish Bath is being done by a Near East University Graduate

A graduate of Faculty of Architecture of Near East University, Architect Çağatay Tekin, is carrying out the restoration project of the ancient Karamanoğlu Turkish Bath, which is estimated to be built in 1302 during the Karamanoğlu Beylic period in Ermenek, a district of Karaman which is a province in Turkey. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Architect Çağatay Tekin graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Near East University in 2010 and has recently begun to run the restoration project of the historical constructions of Karamanoğlu Turkish Bath in Ermenek- an area regarded as natural beauty near the Göksu river, a touristic destination. The restored building will add value to tourism in Ermenek… Architect Çağatay Tekin made a statement regarding the matter and stated that he won the bid of the restoration project offered bythe General Directorate for Foundations and that he meticulously worked on the required processes regarding the pre-excavation, examination and the building survey, restitution and restoration projects. He added that the location was left abandoned for many years and that during the restoration, many documents were expected to be found that could shed light on the Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey’s jurisdiction period and to the history of Ermenek. Furthermore, he expressed that the restoration of the historical places constructed by Karamanids in Ermenek was a significant task and stated that once the restoration of the historical Turkish bath is completed, including the environmental planning, it will add to the value to tourism in Ermenek. He longed for his days as a student at Near East University and remembered Near East family with love… Çağatay Tekin stated that he had established close relations with the locals in Ermenek and that he resembled the accent of the locals to the accent to the Turkish Cypriots` accent; pointing out that there were many shared words. Moreover, Çağatay Tekin expressed how he longed for his days as a student at Near East University and pointed out that as a result of an accident he had in Nicosia in 2009, he had to spend a month and a half at the at the state hospital-Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu. He emphasized that he and his family were not left alone and were supported by the Near East family. He emphasised that he had not forgotten Near East University authorities and academic members who trained him at NEU Faculty of Architecture and expressed that he was very grateful to his teachers. In addition, Çağatay Tekin stated that as soon as he graduated, he initiated his career life by preparing projects of aqueducts in Aydın- Çine, building survey, restitution and restoration projects. Later, he continued his career by working on building survey, restitution and restoration projects of Akköprü bridge in Muğla-Dalaman. An Emotional and Honouring Moment… It was pointed out that the Academic Member of Faculty of Pharmacy of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Filiz Meriçli went on a trip to Ermenek to see the current status of the area, which was her family heritage, and came across Çağatay Tekin unexpectedly. Making a statement regarding the matter, Academic Member of the Near East University, Prof. Dr. Filiz Meriçli stated that as a living member of the Karamanids dynasty, it was a very nice coincidence for a Near East University graduate to work on the restoration project of a historical site in Karaman, a city where she was born herself. She added that although the house that she was born in had collapsed, it was an emotional and honouring moment when she found out that a Near East University graduate was running this project.

Near East University Attends Gala Event of Turkic World Documentary Film Festival in Istanbul

Near East University is attending to the gala event of the third Turkish World Documentary Film Festival organized by the Federation of Turkic World Journalists. Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate has revealed a press statement stating that the Near East University will participate at the gala event of the opening film “Turkish Home” of the Turkic World Documentary Film Festival that will be held in Istanbul, Osmaniye, between October 2 – November 10, 2018. The Turkic Main Documentary, which was designed within the framework of the Third Turkic World Documentary Film Festival, was created by combining the Turkish main themed shootings in eight different Turkic republics. While the film was produced by Menderes Demir on behalf of the World Federation of Journalists, and the project consultant of the Turkish Cypriot mother in the film was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Kasap, the project consultant of the Department of Radio, TV and Cinema of the Near East University. Zeyde Yalıner Örek, a faculty member from the Faculty of Communication, Department of Radio, TV and Cinema, and Ömer Evre, a graduate of the Near East University, took part in the production and management of the film. The shootings completed in ten days were performed in the village of Cihangir in Cyprus, while the Turkish Cypriot mother was portrayed by sixty-five-year-old Zarif Köse and her daughter Selen Köse Esenel. Interdisciplinary Security Studies MA Program Opened at Near East University…

Interdisciplinary Security Studies Master program has been opened to provide students with the necessary knowledge, methods and approaches to analyze the global and regional security problems of our present time in a multidimensional strategic level and to develop projections for future security circles and contexts within the body of Near East University Institute of Social Sciences. According to the press information released by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, the Interdisciplinary Security Studies MA Program, which has an interdisciplinary curriculum, has different branches of Social Sciences and will accept students graduating from such branches including Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Law, History, Sociology, Education, Communication Sciences and so on. In addition, in exceptional cases, students who have received a bachelor’s degree from a different field may also be admitted to the program after assessment of their status. In the MA program where different dimensions of security will be examined in a multifaceted manner, the courses of Safety Theory and Applied Security Studies, which are compulsory courses, are also covered: There will be elective courses such as Strategic Planning, Public Information and Records Management, Conflict Law, Disaster Management, Perception Management, Environmental Security Law, Ethnicity Studies, Food Safety, International Relations Theories, Conflict Resolution in International Relations. Medical Students’ Association of Northern Cyprus Has Concluded an Important Agreement…Near East University Faculty of Medicine Students will be Able to Do Internship All Over the World…

Medical Students’ Association of Northern Cyprus (MSANC) has signed a contract with the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), which is one of the largest student-run organizations representing medical students’ associations across the globe. The contract covers terms for sending students to internship exchange programs of IFMSA. Within the frame of the contract signed between parties, medical students from Northern Cyprus will be sent to the internship programs and the internship exchange students will be hosted in our country. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) held the 66th August Meeting General Assembly in Québec in Canada. It was stated that the Medical Students’ Association of Northern Cyprus participated in the event and represented the medical students and our country successfully. Within the scope of the August Meeting General Assembly, Québec City hosted a fair with Capacity Building Workshops. Parla Ulual, President of the Medical Students’ Association of Northern Cyprus, along with Vice President Arda Atamtürk, who is in charge of foreign affairs, participated in the Presidents’ Pre-General Assembly and made presentations introducing the island of Cyprus and Near East University Hospital. Attracting great attention of many countries, especially the countries of Europe and America, with their presentation, MSANC had the opportunity to sign a contract regarding internship and research exchange program. Within the determined quota and the scope of student exchange program, Medical Students’ Association of Northern Cyprus will not only host 24 medical students from 19 countries for one-month internship but also send medical students from Northern Cyprus to other countries for internship. Registration to the Near East University Non-Thesis Master’s Programme on Secondary School Field Teaching has begun

It was announced that the registration to the Non-Thesis Master’s Programme offered by Near East University for the Fall Term of the Academic Term 2018-2019 on Secondary School Field Teaching has started. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relation of Near East University, applications to the non-thesis master’s programme will continue by the end of 28th September 2018 (end of working hours) and those who are interested are advised to make their registries in person to the NEU Registrar’s Office. Furthermore, in order to make registry to the above-mentioned programme, candidate students are required to have the following requirements: Being a TRNC citizenship and also being a graduate of a 4-year programme of Faculty of Education of a higher education institution. In addition to the above, further details about the programme was provided and stated that the non-thesis master’s thesis programme comprised a total of 13 modules and the modules would be available on weekdays after 17.00 hrs and the programme is to be completed by June, 2019. Near East University to hold the Second of International Animal Source Food Congress

Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Food Hygiene and Technology is organizing the 2nd International Animal Source Food Congress. According to the press info released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate, the second of the International Animal Source Food Congress which, aims to bring together the the target masses and the firms producing food products to meet the innovations on food production, analysis and hygene, will be held at Concorde Luxury Resort Hotel on 8-11 November. At the Congress, innovative developments and new information will be shared, problems will be discussed and solutions will be produced with the participants interested in scientific and technological fields, including the veterinary faculties, food, agriculture and environmental engineering, departments related to science and literary faculties, nutrition and dietetics and gastronomy departments, fisheries faculties, vocational colleges as well as participants from food related institutions and organizations .
