Near East University Faculty of Nursing has been represented at the Surgical Nursing Congress

Near East University, Vice Dean of Faculty of Nursing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz attended the 16th International Surgical Nursing congress in Antalya. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz a panellist and the moderator of a session at the congress. It was stated that she did a presentation titled as “Patients who use anticoagulants” at the panel was on “Nursing of Surgical Patients who have associated diseases”. During her presentation she provided details on the definition of anticoagulant drugs, their adverse effects, and issues to be cautious about while using the medication. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz further explained that anticoagulant drugs eliminate or reduce blood clotting and that these drugs are often called blood thinners. However, she stressed that they do not really thin blood and helped prevent or break up dangerous blood clots that form in blood vessels or heart. Without treatment, these clots can block blood circulation and lead to a heart attack or stroke. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz added that anticoagulant drugs such as heparin and warfarin (also called Coumadin) slowed down blood clotting and antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin and clopidogrel were important in cardio-vascular diseases and in the primary and secondary treatment of embolic cases. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz: “Bleeding is the most encountered side effect of anticoagulant drugs!” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz explained that the most knwon side effect of anticoagulant drugs was bleeding and pointed out that low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) caused less bleeding compared to standard heparin. LMWH is a class of anticoagulant medications which are used in the prevention of blood clots and treatment of venous thromboembolism and in the treatment of myocardial infraction. Moreover, she explained that heparin was a naturally occurring polysaccharide that inhibits coagulation, the process that leads to thrombosis. Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) which measures how many seconds it takes for the blood to clot was advantageous to use. “In order to use anticoagulant drugs safely, nurses need to be aware of their significant responsibilities so as to ensure the safety of patients!” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz boldly emphasized that nurses were required to be well informed of the drugs used for treatment, their effects and side effects so as to ensure the safety of patients. She said that in order to use anticoagulant drugs safely, nurses need to be aware of their significant responsibilities and assure that patients are administered these drugs safely. She ended her words by pointing out the significance of pharmacological education of nurses.

Academic Member of University of Tartu, Estonia Tartu Prof. Dr. Eiki Berg gave a seminar at Near East University

Furthermore, the communal relations and cross-border cooperation could be organised and institutionalized. Prof. Dr. Berg emphasised how border check points in Cyprus impacted on the two communities in Cyprus… He stressed how the border check points in Cyprus were influencing the Turkish and Greek Cypriots on the island but also pointed out that compared to the other examples mentioned above this interaction was still quite limited in nature. Prof. Dr. Berg emphasised that the main reason for this was based on having recognition, political concerns, and the feeling of trust among the two communities. He asserted that the border check points caused a duality; while check points caused an interaction between two communities they also made a greater disintegration. 4 operations cling the patient to life

A patient was sent to Near East University Hospital and after medical examinations the patient was diagnosed with gangrene in left foot, a bubbling in the aorta in the abdomen, blockages in the veins which supply blood to the left leg and foot and a middle staged renal failure. Additionally, the 72 year old patient, Artan Ilgar, was diagnosed with several health issues threatening his life and therefore was taken on a comprehensive treatment plan by specialist from many departments; mainly the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. It was stated that after 4 different operations, the patient had recovered his health. As a result of further medical examinations, a balloon 10cm in diameter was diagnosed in the aortic valve in the abdomen (abdominal aortic aneurysm-which is a localized abnormal weak spot on a blood vessel wall that causes an outward bulging, likened to a bubble or a balloon). Additionally, a major blockage was identified in the blood vessels which supply the left leg and left foot. Moreover, the patient’s intestines were not functioning effectively, causing a renal failure at a medium stage. Thus the temperature and infection parameters of the patient were quite high and therefore a treatment plan at the intensive care was initiated by the specialist from infectious diseases and general surgery. Subsequent to the infection treatment, a commission consisting of Chief Physician, Cardiovascular Surgery, Orthopaedics, general Surgery and Interventional Radiology Specialists made evaluations regarding the health condition of Artan Ilgar and transferred to the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. Two operations in a single session… Evaluated by the cardiovascular surgeons, the patient’s abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery was decided to be carried out as closed surgical treatment since there was high life threatening risk. During the same closed surgical procedure a bypass surgery was decided to the patient’s left leg. According the statement made by the Cardiovascular Surgery Department, the first session of high risked surgeries included two surgeries one of which was to treat the aortic aneurism via international radiology; and the cardiovascular surgeons closed surgery to place a stent in the aorta in the patient’s left leg. This surgery was performed to improve the supply of the blood vessel to the leg with gangrene and limit the gangrene to below the knee area. Loss of supply of blood vessels due to blockage causes gangrene… According to the information revealed by the Near East University Hospital Department Orthopaedics, since the first day the patient had arrived to the hospital he had been diagnosed with gangrene in his left leg. It was explained that gangrene is a condition that occurs when the body tissue dies due to loss of blood supply and that the patient’s gangrene condition was monitored since the first day of arrival to the hospital. It was stated that the gangrene was life threatening to the other organs and that he had to be amputated below the knee area. The 4th operation involved bypass to 3 blood vessels… Prior to the first operation Cardiovascular Surgeons performed angiography to the patient and diagnosed that cardiac veins were seriously blocked and a further bypass surgery was required. One week after the aneurysm operation was carried out, specialists from the Near East University Hospital Department of Cardiovascular Surgery conduced bypass operation to 3 blood vessels. It was revealed that after all of the medical procedures mentioned above were carried out and the patient had been kept in the intensive care for two days, he was moved to the inpatient care; later to be discharged from the hospital.
