Near East University Women’s Basketball Team, becoming champion of PTT Women Turkey Cup 2018 and completing the FIBA Europa League as leader of Group B undefeated with 12 winning, is going to quarter-finals and challanging to the Bourges Basket of France, ranked fourth in Group A, in the first leg of play-offs. Near East University Women’s Basketball Team defeating Hatay BŞB 86-79 became the champion of 2018. Near East University will struggle against the winner of Fenerbahçe-Hatay BŞB match on Sunday, February 25, 2018. According to the information given by the Near East University Sports Club, the match played in Mardin Artuklu New Sports Hall started with Olcay Cakir Turgut, Quanitra Hollingsworth, Kayla McBride, Sandrine Gruda and Courtney Vandersloot. Match periods ended 7-15, 33-30, 61-46 and 79-63. Courtney Vandersloot at Near East University was chosen the most valuable player of the game. In the first period of the game which started with mutual baskets, Near East University, which increased the tempo of the match and continued to make scores with Sandrine Gruda, Jantel Lavender and Kayla McBride, finished the first period 33-30 ahead. Near East University Near East Institute Committee: “Oral History Project based on the views of the politically elected” was presented to the TRNC Chairperson of the Parliament, Teberrüken Uluçay… The project run by the Near East University Near East Institute was presented to the Chairperson of the Parliament, Teberrüken Uluçay, during a visit of courtesy. Teberrüken Uluçay was provided details regarding the project which is moderated by the Head of Near East Institute Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Koldaş, and the significance of the project in terms of the country and the parliament was emphasised. Teberrüken Uluçay stated that as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament, they were ready to support the study at its each stage. He also congratulated the Near East University Near East Institute for planning and bringing a significant such as the one in question to life. During the courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the Parliament, the following figures were also present: Vice Head of Near East Institute, Assist. Prof. Dr Mert Baştaş, Projects Coordinator Dr. Mustafa Çıraklı and Head of TRNC Administrative, Financial, Technical and Parliament Assist. Chairperson of the TRNC Parliament Teberrüken Uluçay: “The project data will serve as a significant database for the parliament!” Making evaluations regarding the project presented to him, the Chairperson of the TRNC Parliament, Teberrüken Uluçay, stated that the project seemed rather significant for the country as a whole and for the parliament in particular. He added that in terms of institutionalism, there were many deficiencies. In this regard, he stressed his belief that he expected the project to be an important database for the parliament and that is why they were ready to fully support the project. Furthermore, he emphasised that having recording data to be retrieved from individuals who have previously worked, put efforts for the TRNC parliament will be great data source. In fact, he stated that the project will also provide an opportunity to honour all those who played a role in the political history of the country. Assoc. Prof Dr. Umut Koldaş: “This project will be the first and only of its kinds for the Turkish Cypriots” Head of Near East Institute, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Koldaş, provided insights regarding theproject and stated that knowledge, experiences and suggestions of political figures will be scientifically scrutinised and documented and the aim of the project was to enable the data to act as a future reference for the next generations. Furthermore, he pointed out that a systematic study on political figures who were elected has never been done before. Therefore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Koldaş stressed that the project at hand will be filling this knowledge gap and contribute to the knowledge of the public on the matter. Since 1960, political organisations and elected figures from these represented the Turkish Cypriots. He expressed that interviews will be conducted and the data collected will be interpreted by basing them with Oral History method and paradigms. He ended his words by pointing out that they were planning to complete the project within a year and the fact that the TRNC Parliament supports and provides ownership will make the project much more meaningful as being realised. At the end of the courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the TRNC Parliament, Teberrüken Uluçay was wished the best of luck for his duty and presented a plaque in memory of the day.

The Project of Near East University Near East Institute, titled as “Oral History Project Based on the views of the Politically Elected Turkish Cypriots” is expected to shed light on the Political History of Cyprus…

A scientific project will document oral history of the Turkish Cypriots Elected. The project “Oral History Project based on the views of the politically elected Turkish Cypriots” will be run by Near East University Near East Institute. Interviews will be conducted with elected Turkish Cypriots, who are still alive, figures who have acted within political organisations and represented the community since 1960. These interviews will be scrutinised as periods and as subjects themes; all of which will provide data on the political history of Cyprus with a focus on Turkish Cypriots. Subsequent to systematic review of the literature, the project is expected to be done on a more comprehensive scale and be the first and only one of its kinds in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Head of Near East Institute, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Koldaş, will be mentoring the project which is expected to be completed within a year. Upon completion, the results of the project will be shared with the public. Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan Günsel: “We are making the final preparations to realise a project which will shed light on the history of our country and will also guide and direct its future…..” According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NEU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irfan S. Günsel, made a statement on the matter and pointed out that the aforementioned project is to be realised by the Near East University-Near East Institute. He pointed out that via this project, they were going to establish a database which will enable those who wish to research into the most reliable and valid data sources. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irfan S. Günsel further stated that they as the Near East University prioritised quality in scientific research and emphasised his strong belief that the moral and financial support provided to research by the Near East University was leading to accumulation of high-quality studies. Moreover, he stated that the research at hand was going to provide details regarding the recent past of the country and that they were planning to share the findings of the study with the public in the most effective way. He said that he main mission of the NEU multi-dimensional developments of communities and that they were planning this project to assist future political actions to be made. Assoc. Oral history project will include methods and paradigms strongly connected with oral history. The project team will consist of academic members from different backgrounds such as; social sciences, communication sciences, international relations.
