Hosting Abdullah Gül University in the 4th week of Turkish Women’s Basketball Super League, Near East University outscored its opponent by 40 points and won the game 85-45. With this victory, Near East University continues its way without losing by winning 4 out of 4 games while Abdullah Gül University tasted its first defeat this season. According to the info released by Near East University Sports Club, the game took place at Caferağa Sports Saloon and Near East University started the game with Cansu Köksal, Kayla McBride, Courtney Vandersloot, Quanitra Hollingsworth, and Jantel Lavender. Exhibiting a very effective performance, Near East University won the game victoriously by giving its opponent no chance and respite. Starting the game with an outstanding performance based on “team first” mentality, the versatile players of Near East University scored 31 points, handed out 10 assists and 7 rebounds during the first quarter. Near East University Sports Tower has been brought into service with a grand ceremony

The grand opening of Near East University Sports Tower was realized with the participation of the Prime Minister Hüseyin ÖZGÜRGÜN. Having been designed to offer services in all branches of sports as well as body/fitness exercises for all age-groups, Near East University Sports Tower with its 120 trainers and personnel has opened its doors for all sports enthusiasts. Cevdet Yılmaz, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development of the Republic of Turkey, Vice President of the AK Party will give a seminar on economic security in Turkey within the scope of the Security Academy Certificate Program organized by the Near East Institute of Near East University. International Environment and Educational Sciences Conference-ICES 2017, completed with 38 scientific research of Near East University

International Environment and Educational Sciences Conference organized under the auspices of the Presidency of TRNC Parliament – ICES 2017 held at Kyrenia Vuni Palace Hotel. According to the press information given by the Near East University Directorate of Press and Public Relations, the conference started with the opening speeches of Mrs. Sibel Siber, President of the TRNC Parliament, Mr. Fikri Ataoğlu, Minister of Tourism and Environment and Assist. Prof. Dr. Mert Baştaş, member of Near East Institute and lasted 3 days. During the conference, 114 presentations, 22 poster presentations and video presentations were realized. It was stated in the press info that Prof.Dr. Buket Akkoyunlu from Çankaya University attracted attention with her presentation titled “Informatics Literacy Mobile Communication”, Balkans Environmental Association Co-Chair Prof.Dr. Mariana Golumbeanu attracted attention with her presentation titled “European-Black Sea Environmental Cooperation” and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kapila Liyanage from the University of Derby also attracted attention with his presentatin titled “Sustainable Business and New applications in Manufacturing Engineering”. Many Scientific works of the Near East University has been published in SSCI / SCI Magazines In ICES 2017, the Near East University took place with 38 scientific studies, many of which were selected by the editorial boards and published in the journals scanned within SSCI / SCI and linked to Thomson & Reueters. Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy has been represented at a Workshop in Malta

Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy has been represented at the workshop titled as “Curriculum Design and Updating for Clinical Pharmacy Teaching”, which was jointly organised by European Association of Faculties of Pharmacy (EAFP); American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP); and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the workshop was held in the capital city of Malta, Valletta. It was pointed out that the event was hosted by Malta University Faculty of Pharmacy and there were participants from many different countries around the globe. Moreover, it was stated that the participants of the workshop provided information on curriculums currently in use at their Faculties of Pharmacy, alongside information on curriculum development processes and then shared ideas on how to update curriculums. In addition to the above, further details were provided regarding the participants of the workshop, stating that they were representatives from Turkey, Portugal and America, and that the Head of Department of Pharmacy of Near East University Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgen Başgut, Dr. Laika Gökçekuş and Specialist Nevzat Birand represented both the NEU and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Academic Members of Faculty of Pharmacy of Near East University provided information on clinical rotations regarding the clinical teaching of pharmacy at the Near East University Hospital and on the responsibilities of Drug Counselling Centre relevant with education. Possibilities relevant to how curriculums for Faculties of Pharmacy could be updated were discussed… Ideal ways of making changes and updating curriculums were evaluated in teams, then as a follow-up procedure, possible evaluation of the changes to be made were considered. It was stated that each faculty of pharmacy contributed to the workshop by sharing their own experiences and that the academicians from the Faculty of Pharmacy of Near East University provided the other participants of the workshop their experiences on the changes they had to make during the process of getting accreditation to their curriculum. Moreover, it was stated that the workshop had provided the participants from different countries to establish future collaborations to be made in the near future. As a result of the meetings, it was agreed upon that curriculums administered at the faculties of pharmacy and relative educational applications have started a new continuum; therefore, it was rather significant to re-design the curriculums in accordance with the contemporary needs identified.

Organized by Near East University, Conference Series – 100 Top Turkish Scientists continues with intensive interest

In order to provide forum for scholars and keynote lecturers to address scientific issues, to present their scientific studies and promote the scientific studies for new discoveries, Near East University organized Conference Series on ‘100 Reasons to Do Science’. Scheduled to host Top100 Turkish Scientists from all around the world, the Conference Series hosted Professor Ahmet Murat TEKALP as the keynote speaker of the third forum. Prof. Dr. TEKALP has carried out significant scientific studies on Digital Image and Video Processing so far and his publications are among the most cited scientific studies. Within NEU’s fundamental objective and innovative approach towards transforming the society via education and scholar research, the third forum of the Conference Series on ‘100 Reasons to Do Science’ was realized with the participation of Prof. Dr. Murat TEKALP, one of the forerunners of the scientific studies on signal proccessing, and digital image and video proccessing. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of Near East University, the third forum of the Conference Series was held at Near East University Hospital Conference Hall 101. During the conference, Professor Murat Tekalp addressed issues relevant to digital image, video processing, image and video compression and video networking. He also delivered information on software-defined network (SDN), which is a system that turns complexity into simplicity in the network world. He also touched upon the crucial role of traffic engineering in optimizing the performance of a telecommunications network by dynamically analyzing, predicting and regulating the behavior of data transmitted over that network. The Conferrence attracted intensive interest At the end of his presentation, Professor TEKALP answered the respective questions directed to him and extended his appreciations to NEU Rectorate, faculty members and students for their intense interest in the conference. Who is Prof. Dr. Murat TEKALP? Murat Tekalp was born in Istanbul in 1958. He received BS degrees (dual degree) in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Bogazici University in 1980 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1982 and 1984, respectively. He has been with Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, New York, from1984 to 1987. In 1987, He began his academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Rochester New York, where he was named as Associate Professor in 1990, Professor in 1995 and Distinguished University Professor in 2000. Murat TEKALP, who is currently a Professor at Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey, had been a guest faculty member at the Bilkent University in 1992-1993 and at Sabancı University in 1999-2000. Prof. TEKALP is a Fellow of IEEE and a member of Turkish Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea. He was named as Distinguished Lecturer by IEEE Signal Processing Society in 1998, and awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship in 1999. He received the TUBITAK Science Award (highest scientific award in Turkey) in 2004. He chaired the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Committee on Image and Multidimensional Signal Processing from 1996 to 1997. He has been serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier journal Signal Processing: Image Communication since 1999. As January 2004, Professor TEKALP had 88 articles that published in peer-reviewed journals that accessible on Science Citation Index. These publications received 1240 citations.

Near East University Department of Nursing has been represented at the National Urology Congress

Vice Dean of Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences and Head of Department of Nursing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz and Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen attended the 26th National Urology Congress-7th National Urologic Nursing Congress. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University Vice Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Department of Nursing Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz acted as the chairperson of the 7th National Urologic Nursing Congress and as a panellist in a session; whereas Academic Member of Department of Nursing Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen acted as a panellist at the same congress. Radiation Safety in Urology It was pointed out that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümran Dal Yılmaz acted as panellist at the session titled as “Radiation Safety in Urology” where radiation was defined; different types of radiation; radiation sources; organisation of the x-ray room; and radiation safety and precautions to be taken were discussed. At the congress, Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen spoke about Patient Safety During Urological Surgeries and Ethical Issues. She provided information surgical operations such as prostatectomy cystectomy, nephrectomy, and incontinence. She stated that by the end of 1990s, developments in laparoscopy, endourology, robotic surgery and the same-day surgeries were observed and this led to an increase in the number of operations carried out. Therefore, the increase in incidences has caused the necessity to consider patient safety and ethical issues relatively. Furthermore, Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Totur Dikmen expressed that there was a strong need for in-service training courses so as to assure the safety of patients during surgeries and deal with ethical issues. Additionally, she stressed that there was a need to improve the communication among team members, establish ethical consultation units, raise awareness on patient safety, improve environmental conditions, make use of safety during surgery checklist, and medical error reporting.

With this win, Near East University achieved its third win in the League. Thus, Samsun Canik Belediyespor tasted its first defeat in the League versus Near East University. Near East University Sports Center released that the periods of the game that took place at Samsun Canik Municipality Sports Hall resulted as 18-18, 33-34, 39-53 and 47-65. The game was the scene of breathtaking moments as both team fought hard to grasp and get the game.
