Near East University leaves its mark in Beijing

Aiming to bring together the leading academic scientists, researchers and research scholars to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of information technologies, the 8th World Conference on Information Technology was held at China Hall of Science and Technology Hotel in Beijing- China. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Uzunboylu, Dean of Near East University Atatürk Faculty of Education, participated in the conference as an invitee. The conference that themed on “Emerging technologies” provided a premier interdisciplinary platform for participants to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of Information Technologies. According to the press info released by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, the 8th World Conference on Information Technology provided platform for scientists, academics, researchers and research scholars to exchange their ideas by sharing and discussing theoretical and practical knowledge in a scientific environment. In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Uzunboylu touched upon The 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that adopted by the United Nations on September 25th, 2015 and drew attention to the importance of ensuring inclusive and quality education for all and promoting lifelong learning. According to UN data 57 million children remain out of school Underlining that obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development, Prof. Dr. Uzunboylu stated that major progress had been made towards increasing access to education at all levels and increasing enrolment rates in schools particularly for women and girls. “Basic literacy skills have improved tremendously, yet bolder efforts are needed to make even greater strides for achieving universal education goals” said he. He also drew attention to certain facts by referring to UN data: “Enrolment in primary education in developing countries has reached 91 per cent but 57 million children remain out of school. More than half of children that have not enrolled in school live in sub-Saharan Africa. An estimated 50 per cent of out-of-school children of primary school age live in conflict-affected areas. 103 million youth worldwide lack basic literacy skills, and more than 60 per cent of them are women” indicated he. Prof. Dr. Uzunboylu: “It is essential to benefit from teaching technologies in disseminating lifelong learning” Touching upon the crucial role of using teaching technologies in ensuring inclusive and quality education and promoting lifelong learning, Prof. Dr. Uzunboylu proposed the use of a variety of teaching technologies including instant messaging for creating awareness, emerging technologies – particularly information technologies, web-based learning, interactive and collaborative m-Learning environments, social media and virtual classroom environments for education. At the end of his remarks, Prof. Dr. Uzunboylu gave examples regarding the research studies and the result of these studies that carried out within the body of NEU Atatürk Faculty of Education.

In the second week of Turkish Women’s Basketball League, the Near East University Women’s Basketball Team faced Mersin representative Çukurova Basketball and won this home game 93-83. Thus, the Near East University achieved its second win in the new season. According to the info released by the Near East University Sports Club, the game took place at Caferağa Sports Saloon and the Near East University started with Courtney Vandersloot, Olcay Çakır Turgut, Kayla McBride, Bahar Çağlar and Quanitra Hollingsworth. 24-33, 46-51, 64-70 and 93-83 were the scores of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and the last periods respectively. The versatile players of the Near East University exhibited a great performance to grasp and get the game. Crashing the boards, handing out significant assists and scoring 29 points in the final quarter, Near East University defeated Çukurova Basketball 93-83. The final period of the game was breathtaking. NEU’s resistance and strong team spirit was striking. Towards the final minutes of the match the score was tied to 77-77. During the final 5 minutes, the versatile players of NEU, particularly Quanitra Hollingsworth, Kayla McBride, Courtney Vandersloot took the scene; they got inside the paint and drove the ball to basket. In this final period, the Near East University exhibited its difference and defeated Çukurova Basketball overwhelmingly by a net score 93-83. For 2017-2018 regular season, Near East University Women’s Basketball Team will host Çukurova Basketball in the second week of Turkish Women’s Basketball League. The Near East University Sports Club released that the Near East University Women’s Basketball Team would face Çukurova Basketball at Caferağa Sports Saloon at 16:30 on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Zafer Kalaycıoğlu: “We will fight against a new and assertive team” Expressing his views regarding the opponent, Zafer Kalaycıoğlu, the Head Coach of NEU Women’s Basketball Team, stated that they would face a strong and assertive team. “Cukurova Basketball is experiencing its rookie year in the league. However, in the first game of the season, they defeated an important team like Beşiktas at the home-game. Their significant transfers and the win versus Beşiktaş is a clear indicator that it is a challenging and assertive team that we need to take seriously. In the team, they have veteran players of the women’s basketball. We will play versus a team that wants to be permanent in the league in their first full season. They will face important and challenging teams of Turkish League in the first weeks of the season. We will host them for the second match of the league. Within the week, we took out a win from a very tough and challenging game in FIBA Euroleague. We will do our best to win by relieving the tiredness of Euroleague” said he.

The Group Meeting of the Stakeholders of the project “Library for All”, of which the Near East University is a stakeholder as well, was held in Ankara

The second Stakeholders Meeting of 2017 for “Library for All “project brought the stakeholders including the Near East University together in Ankara on Saturday 7 October, 2017. According to the press info released by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the Near East University, NEU Grand Library Collection Coordinator Emre Karahasan attended the meeting where LFA (Library for All) Director M. Emin Küçük delivered the opening speech and provided information about the activities that carried out recently within the scope of the project. Then, Dr. Zehra Taşkın from the Impact Assessment Working Group addressed to the attending body and expressed the impact of the project on libraries in figures. Karahasan: “To make the libraries a “Center of Attraction” via LFA Program” Delivering information about LFA program, which adopts ‘Local Transformation, Global Access’ as its official motto, Emre Karahasan, NEU Grand Library Collection Coordinator, underlined that the program aimed at putting a changeover and development into motion in municipality libraries in provinces, districts, cities and turning these libraries into a center of attraction for the citizens living in these regions. Highlighting that LFA program would help not only to transform municipality libraries into centers for community, Karahasan indicated that the program would also play a significant role in providing women, elderly, adults, unemployed, disabled, and rural people with benefits regarding economic development, education, communication and cultural issues that included in the field of impact assessment. Karahasan said that everything required ensuring the sustainability of program activities, which are also supported by stakeholders in the society, the private sector and NGOs, would be done. To ensure a higher quality of life for citizens via LFA program In his remarks regarding the vision of LFA program, Karahasan underlined that the program attached a special focus on turning the municipality libraries in provinces, districts and cities into community centers and ensuring a higher quality of life by contributing to the lives of women, elderly, young, unemployed, disabled and rural people on issues regarding economical development, education, communication and culture. Karahasan emphasized that the mission of LFA program was to make the municipality libraries in provinces, districts and cities become a center of attraction that meets the information needs of the citizens. Near East University Department of Nursing has been represented at the International Congress on Women’s and Children’s Health and Education in Kocaeli

Academic Member of Department of Nursing of Faculty of Health Sciences of Near East University Nurse Dilek Sarpkaya Güder successfully represented the Near East University at the 2nd International Congress on Women’s and Children’s Health and Education held in Kocaeli, Turkey. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the 2nd International Congress on Women’s and Children’s Health and Education in Kocaeli with the support of Istanbul Association of Science and Academicians. Furthermore, it was stated that the main theme of the congress was raising healthy and well-educated individuals to the public and that the congress was a multidisciplinary congress providing views from both education and the health sciences. Women’s problem based issues were discussed at the congress… Throughout the two days of the congress, problems encountered by women were discussed. Some of the issues discussed are as the following: Problems encountered in the work environments; cancer and significance of early diagnosis; anger and stress management; things to bear in mind prior to and after maternity; planning motherhood and health of disabled women; problems encountered during pregnancy and birth; awareness during pregnancy; difficulties of motherhood; motherhood rights; being conscious and a competent parent; protection of children; child care and issues in the education of children; improving the quality of education; contemporary approaches in education; volunteering in health and education; and the use of technology. A verbal presentation was given by Dilek Sarpkaya Güder on a work prepared jointly by Academic Members of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Near East University, Prof. Dr. Gülşen Vural and Prof. Dr. Mesut Yalvaç, titled as “The effect of preparation to birth training on the mother and the newborn”. “Systemised and well programmed ‘Preparation to Birth Courses’ should be provided in the state and private hospitals, and the private clinics in the TRNC” It was pointed out that fear from giving birth has a negative effect on giving birth and the birth outcomes. In this regard, it was suggested that systemised and well programmed preparation to birth courses should be given to reduce all negative aspects which can arise from this fear. This includes an exercise program done during pregnancy and lead to positive outcomes for birth. Furthermore, nurses can provide pre-birth (antenatal) courses independently. It was emphasised there was a need to provide systemised and well-programmed preparation to birth courses in state and private hospitals; as well as private clinics in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Near East University hosted Prof. Dr. Çetin Kaya Koç as the first keynote speaker at Conference Series-Top 100 Turkish Scientists

In order to provide forum for scholars and keynote lecturers to address scientific issues, to present their scientific studies and promote the production of science, the Near East University organized Conference Series. Scheduled to host Top100 Turkish Scientists from all around the world that produced the most cited scientific studies in recent years, the Conference Series hosted Çetin Kaya Koç, Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering, University of California Santa Barbara, as keynote lecturer at its first forum. The goal is to promote scientific studies and production of science The Conference Series, which was organized to promote scientific studies and production within NEU’s fundamental objective and innovative approach for transforming the society through education and scholar research, hosted Prof. Dr. Cetin Kaya Koç, one of the forerunners of the cryptography technique, which is a mathematical method for secure communication. His research interests are in cryptographic hardware and embedded systems; secure hardware design, side-channel attacks and countermeasures, algorithms and architectures for computer arithmetic and finite fields. Günsel and the Rectorate. Who is Prof. Dr. Çetin Kaya Koç? Prof. Dr. Çetin Kaya Koç, who is a leader and visionary in cryptographic technology, is currently a lecturer at the Department of Computer Engineering at University of California Santa Barbara. He is an IEEE Fellow since 2007 for his contributions to cryptographic engineering. Koç is the co-founder of the Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems (CHES) which is the second largest cryptography conference and the premier forum for presenting scientific advances in all aspects of cryptographic hardware and security of embedded systems. Koç is also co-founder of two other conferences including International Workshop on the Arithmetic of Finite Fields (WAIFI) and Security Proofs for Embedded Systems (PROOFS). Koç is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cryptographic Engineering (JCEN), which covers all aspects of design and implementation of cryptographic hardware and software. Koç is an Associate Editor of the prestigious International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science. His research interests are in electronic voting, cyber-physical security, cryptographic hardware and embedded systems, elliptic curve cryptography and finite fields, and deterministic, hybrid and true random number generators.

Near East University’s Euroleauge Adventure begins … First Rival Italian Team Famila Schio

The Women’s Basketball Team of the Near East University will play their first match at the Women’s Euroleague, the most prestigious stage of European basketball competition this year, with the Italian rival, Famila Schio. According to a press statement released by the Near East University Sports Club, the first match of 2017-2018 Euroleauge season will be played at the Caferağa Sports Hall hosted by the Near East University on Wednesday, October 11th, 2017 at 19.30. The match will be live broadcast on www.fiba.com and BRT1 HD. In Group B, in which Near East University Women’s Basketball Team takes place, UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia), Fenerbahçe (Turkey), Nadezhda Orenburg (Russia), FamilaSchio (Italy), Perfumerias Avenida (Spain), Wisla Can-Pack (Poland) and BLMA (France) are also taking place. After completing the last season with FIBA Eurocup championship in Europe, the Near East University Women’s Basketball Team made serious reinforcements to its team in order to reach its objective in the Euroleaguefinal-four. The Belgian national pivot Ann Wauters, who had a successful season with Bellona AGU after having a championship with Los Angeles Sparks in WNBA, another Belgian national player Kim Mestdagh, and Jantel Lavender, one of the most valuable women basketball players, Turkish national player Cansu Köksal and Gökçe Doğan have been added to the Near East University Women’s Basketball Team. Near East University will follow up new developments in science world with conferences

The opening ceremony of 2017-2018 academic year “Periodic Conferences Series” held by the Experimental Health Sciences Research Center of Near East University was realized. According to the press information released by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, the opening ceremony of the conference series, through which the new developments in the scientific world and the prominent topics will be discussed, was held at Near East University Hospital in Hall B 101. The opening guest of the conference was Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başer from the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Director of the Institute of Health Sciences, who is enlisted in the 36th place on the list of “100 Turks Directing Science” published in May 2017. New theories and new methods must be developed to be a scientist… Prof. Dr. K. Hüsnü Can Başar delivered a speech about difficulties he encountered though his experiences in his academic life and important points of success in reaching out to the qualities for becoming a scientist. Prof. Dr. Başer; “Only researchers make a good technician, but creativity is a must to be a scientist. The ideal is “to be followed”, not “to be a follower”, by putting forward new theories and developing new methods.
