Near East University veterinarians received their diplomas with a ceremony

2016-2017 Academic Year Spring Term graduates of the Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine received their diplomas with a glorious ceremony held at NEU Grand Library Hall 4. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press & Public Relations Office of NEU, the graduation ceremony was realized with the participation of the Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, NEU vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, NEU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Ömer Memduh Esendal, TRNC Veterinary Office Director Hüseyin Ataben, faculty deans, department chairpersons, faculty members, students and their parents. The graduation ceremony began with a commemorative stand in silence for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük, TRNC Founding President Rauf R. Denktaş and all martyrs and followed by national anthem. The participants experienced joyful and unforgettable moments with the music recital performed by Ilyas Abdullina, teaching staff at the Music Teaching Department of Atatürk Faculty of Education. Prof. Dr. Esendal: “On 20 September 2010, the Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine began its educational life as the first and only private veterinary medicine faculty of the island, Turkey and the region that we are in”. Addressing the attending body, the Dean Prof. Dr. ESENDAL underlined the unique position of the Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. “With the responsibility of being the region’s first and only private faculty of veterinary medicine, Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine lives the honor of producing its 3rd term graduates. Since its establishment in the year of 2010, the Near East University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has been carrying out its functions effectively at all levels and offers quality education beyond the standards set by national and international bodies. Up to now, we have raised a total of 61 veterinarians capable to address to all challenges regarding veterinary medicine. Veterinary medicine education is a long-run and difficult education that requires diversification. In addition to theoretical and practical training, it covers slaughterhouse applications and off-institute activities such as farm visits, business visits and mobile clinic. We have the highest level of educational possibilities. We spare no sacrifices to raise highly equipped veterinarians capable to achieve a cutting edge career over the others in this competitive era. Our graduates are well equipped and admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine. They are committed to using their scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare. I wish them success in their professional lives. The graduates received their diplomas after swearing the Veterinarian’s Oath together with the Faculty’s Dean Professor ESENDAL. Faculty’s top ranking graduate was presented his diploma and gold medal by the Board of Trustees Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irfan S. GÜNSEL.

The Graduation Ceremony of Near East University Faculty of Medicine was realised with a high number of participation

Near East University Faculty of Medicine 2016-2017 Academic Year graduates, 35 undergraduate and 5 postgraduates, received their diplomas from his Excellency the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı. According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the graduation ceremony was held at the Near East University Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre. Furthermore, the protocol of the ceremony included the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı, Chairperson of the Parliament Dr. Sibel Siber, TRNC Minister of Health Dr.Faiz Sucuoğlu, Head of Higher Education Planning, Accrediting and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) Prof. Dr. Akile Büke, The Founding Rector of the Near East University Dr. Suat İ.Günsel, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S.Günsel, Vice Rectors, Deans, Academicians and Students of Near East University; and Guests. Prof. Dr. Ümit Hassan; “The families of students who undertake their medical education should be saluted and respected!” The opening speech of the graduation ceremony was done by Near East University Rector, Prof. Dr Ümit Hassan, who emphasised the role the families play in students’ lives who undertake their medical education. Prof. Dr Ümit Hassan emphasised the significance of professions related to the field of medicine and stated that these individuals created a distinguished community; since their work was related to high commitments, good will and perseverance. In his speech he also provided details of the etymological background of the word “hekim (medical attendant)” and stressed that the word was related to “person responsible to know everything”. He ended his words by wishing all the graduates the best of luck in their future careers. Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan; “Near East University Faculty of Medicine has taken its position among the worldly renown Faculties of Medicine!…” Founding Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Near East University Prof. Dr. Gamze Mocan also made a speech at the ceremony and stated that the Faculty was founded in 2008, and that this was the 4th term that graduates of the Faculty. She added that the graduates had gained the right to participate in speciality examinations abroad. Furthermore, she stated that being a doctor was not limited to diagnosing and providing treatment but that it involved continuous work and efforts to develop and learn. She addressed the graduates as her “colleagues” and stated that she was sure they would continue to make the Near East University proud with achieving further success in their lives. Head of YÖDAK Akile Büke; “I am very honoured to be participating to a graduation ceremony of a Faculty of Medicine in our own country!” Head of Higher Education Planning, Accrediting and Coordination Board (YÖDAK) Prof. Dr. Akile Büke stated that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was now known as the location of universities and that she was very proud to be at a graduation ceremony of a faculty of medicine on the island. She stressed that she shared the pride and joy of the academicians of the NEU Faculty of Medicine since there were academicians at the Faculty who had also taught herself. She expressed many thanks and emphasised that this was only a beginning and that the graduates of today needed to continue to study and improve their knowledge and skills in the future. Minister of Health Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu: “Medical Education does not end and continues throughout one’s life!” Also making a speech, the Minister of Health Dr. Faiz Sucuoğlu stressed that the graduates were taking their first steps in their career lives and that they needed to pursue their medical education throughout their lives since medical education never ended. He further stated that their Hippocratic Oath would be guiding them throughout. Chairperson of the Parliament Dr. Sibel Siber: “I believe that the reason why there is so much demand to the profession of doctor was due to the pride and moral satisfaction this profession gave to oneself!” Dr Sibel Siber began her words by congratulating the graduates and expressed her opinion on why there was a high demand to becoming a doctor by stating that this profession provided pride and moral satisfaction to oneself. She ended her words by wishing best of luck to the graduates in their future lives. His Excellency the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı: “The utmost need of a patient from a doctor is the feeling of TRUST!” The final speech of the ceremony was done by the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mustafa Akıncı, where he stated that the utmost feature that a doctor must have is to be a trustworthy person; gaining the trust of his/her patients. He emphasised his belief on becoming a trustworthy doctor in their career lives and wished the graduates much success to be achieved in the future. He reminded the graduates that currently there were 17-18 doctor parliamentarians in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Parliament and pointed out that doctors were keen on taking part in politics. He referenced Minister of Health; Dr Faiz Sucuoğlu’s words “do your own jobs!” He reminded the graduates that being a doctor was toilsome and therefore required them to be willing to do hard work. President Akıncı; “I have observed that the Founding Rector of Near East University, Dr. Suat Günsel, by realising his envisions regarding significant centres.” President Akıncı continued his speech by emphasising that the Founding Rector of the Near East University Dr. Suat Günsel realised his envisions of important centres such as Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre and NEU Grand Library and it was rather significant to try to provide the needs of the community being lived in. It was pointed out that subsequent to the above mentioned speeches the graduates said the Hippocratic Oath and the first three of the Faculty of Medicine; Department First Dr. Nur Bazırbaşi, second Dr. Sarah Dabbaz, and third Dr. Nur Alshanableh were initially given their diplomas.

Near East University receives First Prize from Europe

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören, teaching member of Near East University, Faculty of Medicine, Medical Biology Department and researcher of Experimental Health Sciences Research Center (DESAM) conferred upon the best presentation award of Prof. Mariapia Viola-Magni, European Biotechnology Thematic Networking Society (EBTNA) at the European Biotechnology Congress. In the statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, in the Dubrovnik city of Croatia, about 90 oral presentations and about 300 poster presentations were presented by nearly 400 scientists at the European Biotechnology Congress. In the European Biotechnology congress, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören has been awarded the first prize for the best verbal presentation with his study entitled “Control of trans and cis regulation in the human genome”. Asst. Assoc. Dr. In his work, Ergören focused on human genome dynamics, particularly on the control of meiotic recombination in human chromosomes.

Near East University Faculty of Communication Graduates receive graduation diplomas with ceremony

Near East University Faculty of Communication 2016 – 2017 Spring Semester Graduation Ceremony was held in Library Hall 4. According to the press statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, the ceremony was attended by the Vice Rector of the Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt, Vice Dean of Faculty of Communication, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Keçeci, Department heads, lecturers, students and families. Ceremony started with the reading of National Anthem and a minute of silence in memory of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Founder of Turkey; Leader of Turkish Cypriots, Dr. Fazıl Küçük and all the martyrs. The performances of Yiğit Soguç and Ezgi Kutay, students of Visual Communication and Design Department of the Near East University Faculty of Communication, and Begüm Tekakpınar, student of Music Education Department attracted a great interest in the ceremony. Following the graduation, students were invited to participate in the Communication Diary and a video show presenting the social activities and academic activities realized during the year.

Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences Graduation Ceremony for 2016 – 2017 Spring Semester was held in 2 stages because of the intensive participation in Atatürk Culture Centre Great Hall. According to the press statement made by Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, Central District Governor Ahmet Aslan, President of the Board of Trustees of the Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Sanlıdağ, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Sevinc Yücecan, faculty members, students and parents participated in the ceremony. The graduation ceremony started with a minute of silence and singing the National Anthem in memory of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of Turkey; Turkish Cypriot Leader Dr. Fazıl Küçük, and TRNC Founding President Rauf Denktaş, and all the martyrs. Faculty of Health Sciences Founding Dean Prof. Dr. Sevinç Yücecan; “Today is the joyful day of a long journey through which our graduates, their parents and our lecturers have much contributed for years. Professor Dr. Yücecan said;”18 Graduate, 217 Undergraduate Students Graduated.” Professor Dr. Yücecan said, “18 Graduate students, 217 undergraduate students graduated this term. We are proud that each graduating student is a member of the Near East University, the most prominent, leading and largest educational and cultural center of Cyprus”. Professor Dr. Şanlıdağ; “Near East University is a member of 118 National and International Institutions.” Professor Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “Near East University is a higher education o established in 1988 in line with Dr. Günsel’s enormous vision and now, having an international reputation, it provides international education opportunities with its highly competent academic staff. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ emphasized that the basic aim of the Near East University is to train scientists who are mindful, rational, creative and free-minded. Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ said, “Based on the 3 rd generation university model, the Near East University is dedicated to transform all the scientific data obtained by research and development activities into the benefit of the society.” After the speeches, e music recital performed by Prof. Atakan Sarı and Umut Cem Erten, lecturer of Near East University Ataturk Education Faculty. Later, Prof. Dr. Sevinç Yücecan engaged students into the procecess of making a professional vow. Then, the diplomas were presented in presence of excited families and invited guests who filled up the Hall and the ceremony ended with throwing hats into the air.

Cultures Blended … “International Culture Festival” was held

The International Culture Festival was held within the scope of the cooperation of Near East University Deanery of Student Affairs, Kyrenia University and Rotary Club of Kyrenia Cosmopolitan. According to the information given by the Near East University Press and Public Relations Directorate, students from many countries such as Turkey, Kenya and Nigeria participated in the event, which started with a cortege march from Kyrenia Port. Following the cortege walk, the dance shows performed with the native instruments and clothes of various cultures in the Kyrenia Ramadan Cemil Square were applauded a lot by local people and foreign tourists. Live music with DJ Tandoğdu’s performance took place on the stage set up in the square during the festival which lasted a day and culture, history and tourism were integrated in colorful scenes. Local Foods Exhibited … Within the scope of the festival, the students exhibited authentic products and dishes introducing their own cultures and countries at the stalls they set up at the Near East University. Participants in the event also had the opportunity to visit the stands one by one and to taste the dishes of different cultures. The local dishes displayed at the stands were evaluated by the jury. The jury included Vice-Rector of Kyrenia University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökmen Dağlı, Near East University Dean of Student Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz, Director of School of Tourism and Hotel Management, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tülen Saner, Team Leader of Deanery of Student Affairs, Çağla Akarsel, and Hakkı Müftüzade, representative of Rotary Club of Kyrenia Cosmopolitan and İmren Gürbasar. At the end of the evaluation process, Turkmenistan became the first, Nigeria became the second and Libya became the third. “Culture Sharing Strengthen Friendships …” Near East University Dean of Student Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz stated that the International Cultural Festivals help students from abroad to integrate with Turkish students and with the public as well as promoting their own culture and civilizations.

Near East University FFAD (Faculty of Fine Arts and Design) filled us with pride with the awards

The ‘Young Artists’ Painting Contest’, which is organized traditionally every year by the Directorate of Cultural Office of the Ministry of National Education and Culture of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has been held for the 9th time this year. According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations office of the Near East University, 21 works out of 42 works were deemed worthy to be exhibited in the contest that aimed at encouraging young generation painters. As a result of evaluation without regard to difference in education and perception, ‘Bull’, the work of Selma Jasmin Devin and ‘No 4’, the work of Burçin Pehlivan, students at the Department of Plastic Arts, were deemed worthy for achievement award by the contest jury consisting of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümit İnatçı and artist Oya Silbery. In his explanation regarding the issue, Hasan Zeybek, teaching staff at the Department of Plastic Arts of NEU FFAD, stated that the unique works of the students and their ability in receiving achievement awards filled the Near East Family, particularly their teachers with pride. Touching upon the integrative and unifying power of art in paving the way for all dissociated forces to work together, FFAD Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdal Aygenç expressed his views. “At similar contests that held every year, not only our undergraduate students but also our graduates demonstrate that they move forward by developing themselves in the field of arts and design. This year, along with Selma Jasmin Devin and Burçin Pehlivan, our graduates, Behçet Kemal Caymaz and Tünay Özyay, received honorable mention and performing award respectively. I thank our students and my colleagues who prepare them for such competitions” said he. Following the award ceremony at Nicosia Atatürk Culture Center Exhibition Hall, the exhibition was opened for art lovers. The exhibition is open within the working hours till 30 June, 2017.
