The 5th International Media Workshop of the Near East University Faculty of Communication welcomes significant names of media world

Within the scope of the 5th International Media Workshop organized by the Department of Visual Communication and Design under the Faculty of Communication of the Near East University; Interviews and workshops were held with the participation of the Departments of Journalism, Radio, TV and Cinema, Public Relations and Publicity, Filmmaking and Publishing. According to the press info released by the Press and Public Relations Directorte of NEU, Director Sevinç ÇOR BALOĞLU, producer SU BALOĞLU, director of photography İbrahim ÇALTILI, TV program and publication planning specialist Cavidan ÖNDER and Media Law and Intellectual Property Lawyer Bülent ÖNDER held meetings with students and trasferred their professional experiences to the students. At the same time, guests who were members of Media Research and Cultural Communication Association, also gave information about the implementation process of the Documentary Film Project titled “Journey to the Roots”, which was conducted as a joint project by the Near East University Communication Faculty and Bahçeşehir Communication Faculty. After the meetings, certificate of thanks and commemorative plaques were given.

1450 Athletes, 59 Championships

There are1450 athletes from all sports fields except football at the Near East University and during the 2016-2017 season, these athletes have brought the University 59 different Championships. Just as the success attained in the field of education, Near East University has now become a reference point within Northern Cyprus regarding achievements made in the field of sports. The University has made exemplary steps and thus helped to take the participation and attainments in sports to an international arena. As the 2016-2017 Academic Year is about to end, the University has achieved 59 different Championship with its 1450 athletes who competed in various field of sports except for football. The vision of the Near East University, which targets the university to extend success and achievements in the field of education alongside attainments in the field of sports, has led to triumphs both on the island and at the international platform. Such that, the Women’s Basketball Team of Near East University has won the 2016-2017 Turkish Basketball Cup, EuroCup Championship and also the Championship of the Women’s Basketball League of Turkey. In addition to these, the University has also made other attainments in national and international fields of other sports; all of which caused the Near East University to become the centre of attraction in other countries due to its successes. World famous basketball athletes were recruited to the Near East University Women’s Basketball Team, adding their skills and experiences to the team to make a rather competent basketball team. As one of the strongest teams competing in the Women’s Basketball League of Turkey, Near East University Women’s Basketball teams has recently defeated Fenerbahçe, and has become the Champion of the League; making its mark across the country. In addition to the above, the NEU has also attained championships in both men’s and women’s sports organisations held by the University Sports Federation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus such as; athletics, cycling, chess, darts, tennis, indoors football, swimming and wrestling. Furthermore, Near East Junior College (the primary school) has also achieved a total of 5 championships including swimming, badminton, athletics and tennis. Moreover, Near East College achieved 15 different championships during the 2016-2017 academic year in swimming, running, cross, and athletics. The NEU won and took all the Cups to its Museum… During the 2016-2017 Season, Near East University Women’s Basketball team competed in the European and Turkish Basketball Leagues and has won all the cups; bringing all the cups to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and placing them in its museum. Furthermore, the NEU has also attained the championship cup in the Kıbrıs Vakıflar Bank Men’s Basketball League. Moreover, it has also become the champion of Presidency Cup and in young men’s basketball league. Additionally, Near East University has become the Champion of Kıbrıs Vakıflar Bank Young Men’s Basketball League and also Mehmetali Aksay Young Men’s Basketball Tournament Champion. Over and above, the Near East University continued with its success and became the Champion of Kıbrıs Vakıflar Bank Professional Men’s Basketball League and Atilla Topaloğlu Professional Men’s Basketball Tournament. A lot of records were broken in swimming… Near East University has become the Champion of 2016-2017 season Professionals, Young and Adults categories for both men and women. What is more is that 8 Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus records were broken in Age group 12. Since the date of foundation in 1997, swimming athletes of the Near East University have been trained at the Indoors Olympic Swimming Pool of the University by the skilful and competent coaches of the Near East University. Near East University has become the star of wrestling… The Near East University has clearly made its mark at its success in the field of wrestling as well winning the Championship of the following: Adults Greko-Romen Competition, Mehmet Şemmedi Adults Freestyle Wrestling Competition, Rifat Şener Freestyle Wrestling Competition, Rauf Denktaş Adults Freestyle Competition, Ali Çerkez Freestyle Wrestling Competitions, Raif Kaya Wrestling Competition. NEU also made achievements in Badminton, Volleyball, Chess and Handball… Near East University has become the champion in Men’s and Women’s Badminton; winning the Carlton Badminton League. What is more is that Near East University also won the Volleyball Euro Valencia 2017,Rauf Raif Denktaş Cup and 16. Levent Soykut Cup. Additionally, the NEU won the Chess Federation Cup; Adults Women’s Handball Cup and Cyprus Turkish Sports Writers’ Association Cup and Men’s Cyprus Turkish Sports Writers’ Association Cup; alongside winning the Super Cup Championship. In the matches played among universities, Near East University became the Champion both as a team and as Champions of men’s and women’s… Organised by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Sports Federation in 15 different branches of sports, Near East University became the Champion in Women’s Teams for Athletics, Basketball, Cycling, Chess, Tennis and Swimming. On the other hand, Near East University men’s teams became the champion of athletics, basketball, indoors football, cycling, darts, wrestling and swimming, making a total of 13 championships. Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan Günsel: “Nothing can stop the achievements of hard work”… Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan Günsel stated that success could not by attained by chance and that it could be achieved by means of hard work. Making further statements on the matter, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Günsel, said that the Near East University had 1450 athletes with licence and that the aim of the University was not only to raise good sportspersons but also to raise good, ethical, successful individuals who will do good for the society they are living in. He added that the success of the NEU was the result of well planned and organised team work. “Achievements in sports are being added to the achievements attained in education…” Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan Günsel continued to make remarks on the overall attainments of Near East University and expressed that a University should not only be the centre of education but should also embrace social, cultural and sportive activities. He said that this was the reason why they valued sports as much as they did. Furthermore, he said that activities such as sports led people to work for something good and there was no room for doing wrong. Moreover, he said that they were trying to successfully represent the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at an international platform and in a way make all the isolations and embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriots to be removed and overcome.

International Dental Students Union Congress to be held at Near East University

The “International Dental Students Union Congress”, which is held every year by the International Dental Students Union (IADS), which aims to bring together 200.000 dental students from 60 countries of 5 continents as well as aiming developments in dentistry field in terms of education and science through international projects, will be held at the Near East University in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus next year. According to a press statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, the dental student unions from many countries in the world will come together at the congress which will take place on March 2018 at the Near East University campus. Realization of Congress in Northern Cyprus confirmed North Cyprus Dental Students Union (NCADS) of Near East University made a presentation at the 63rd semiannual meeting of International Dental Students Union (IADS) held in Beirut, Lebanon and the proposal of NCADS suggesting to hold the 64th International Dental Students Union Congress in Northern Cyprus was accepted. Internship and Exchange Programs Agreements signed with different countries of the world The North Cyprus Dental Students Union (NCADS), which has come together with dental student associations from many countries of the world, has come up with agreements with all the dental faculties of the world on internship and research exchange. Within the framework of the agreement, the dental students are given the opportunity to participate in exchange programs at certain times of the year and to observe and practice in the field of dentistry. Prof. Dr. Çetiner, vide dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of NEU said that they are proud for hosting the next International Dental Students Union Congress at the Faculty of Dentistry of Near East University.

Near East University Represented in Stem Cell Symposium in Manisa

Members of Experimental Health Sciences Research Center (DESAM), Near East University, participated in the 3rd. International Stem Cell Symposium held by Manisa Celal Bayar University. According to the press statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, the symposium, of which the main theme is ‘New Approaches to Stem Cell Applications in Specialized Treatment of Individuals’, attended by participants from Ukraine, Portugal, Germany, Sweden and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Over 120 speakers from different universities including the Near East University participated at the Symposium. At the symposium, members of DESAM, Assist. Prof. Dr. Eda Becer and Assist. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören made their presentations on ‘Isolation and Characterization of Human Circumcision Stem Cells’, ‘Genome Cut and Paste: CRISPR Approach for Personalized Medicine’.

Near East University Research Centre for Applied Linguistics has successfully completed its second year of its project “Building Bridges”

The project of Near East University Research Centre for Applied Linguistics (RCAL) Building Bridges: Teaching English to Diverse Groups has just completed its second year as the 2016-2017 Spring Semester ended. According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, final year students of Department of English Language Teaching shared their experience of teaching for a year with the other students undertaking their higher education at the same department. Making a statement on the matter,Vice Head of the Department of English Language Teaching, Assist. Prof. Dr. Çise Çavuşoğlu, stated that the project was jointly realised by Near East University English Preparatory School and Cyprus Turkish Society for the Protection of Children. Providing further details, she stated that as part of the four year higher education program, the students had an applied teaching module and that final year students were given the opportunity to teach throughout their final year; enabling the Department to raise rather competent teachers for the future. Moreover, it was stated that the students found the opportunity to practically experience classroom management and foreign language teaching techniques in authentic environments, which they later shared with the students studying at the Department of English Language Teaching. Additionally, it was stated that the students also found the chance to ask questions regarding their experience and that the last year students informed the younger students of the Department of the difficulties of teaching two different age groups and explained how they dealt with this difficulty.

Near East University Science Festival receives Great Interest

Faculty of Molecular Biology and Department of Genetics of Near East University and Near East University Student Deanship jointly organised a Science Festival for the students. According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the festival was organised on Near East University campus and more than 750 students attended the university; including students from 14 different secondary schools. As part of science, art and culture festivals held at the University, a science festival was held on Near East University campus. It was stated that students of Near East University Department of Molecular Genetics and NEU Genetics Society provided information on contemporary developments in the field of molecular biology and genetics; and also information on developing new methods and approaches utilized in studies and projects. Furthermore, it was stated that 15 posters were presented and research laboratories were exhibited to the visitors. Students found the opportunity to observe innovative and new-generation technology studies… As part of the science festival, students were taken on a tour around the Near East University Innovation and Information Technologies Centre, they observed the 3-D printer and the Robotics Laboratory. In addition to the above, the students were also shown the first electric-powered car to be manufactured in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Günsel motors, where they found the chance to ask questions regarding the car, about its brand and technical features of this domestic car which was created by the R & G teams, Innovation and Information Technologies Centre and Department of Automotive Engineering of Near East University. Students were very pleased with the latest developments… The teachers who accompanied the students at the science festival expressed how pleased they were about the opportunities provided for the students; pointing out that every year, the students were provided new programs and latest developments in the fields.

Dermatological Screening Program was held at Near East University Hospital to detect Skin Tumours

Melanoma screening was conducted on a number of people, addressed as the risk groups, so as to create awareness on this tumour type and pinpoint the seriousness of this disease. The program was conducted at the Near East University Hospital; with a slogan “Let’s be Aware of Melanoma!” on the risk groups which include melanoma patients and the immediate family members of these patients. According to the press info release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, Specialist Doctor at the Department of Dermatological and Venereal Diseases of Near East University Dr. Serap Maden made statements regarding the screening program and stated that the moles which may be risky were screened, then the patients were informed of the spots which needed to be checked regularly and/or which needed to be removed. Furthermore, she stressed that melanoma patients were informed of how to self-examine the spots and of sun screening for protection. As an external factor, the Sun plays a major role in melanoma disease… Providing further details on the matter, Dr. Serap Maden stated that the Sun played a major role, as an external factor, in the melanoma disease and added that people should be cautious about duration of sun exposure. Pointing to the geographical position of the island, she stressed that during the summer months the angle of sun rays were perpendicular; alongside prolonged periods of sun exposure, which all needed to be handled with care to minimise harms which could be caused on our skin. In this regard, she stated that sun hats and umbrellas should be used, in addition to sun blocking creams recommended according to our skin type by a dermatologist. She added that we should also self-examine our moles and visit a dermatologist as soon as we realise a change. She ended her words by stating that we should be very cautious about melanoma disease since its consequences could be fatal and help raise the public’s awareness on this issue.

Symposium on Life Support and Emergency Response held in Near East University Hospital

Near East University Hospital and Turkey Paramedic Association held a comprehensive symposium on life support and emergency response at the Near East University Hospital with contribution of Near East University Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Suat Günsel Kyrenia University Hospital, and Kyrenia University medical officers and students of Faculty of Medicine. According to the press information given by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, NEU Hospital Emergency Service Chief, Specialist. Dr. Emel Karakuş Sirkeci, chaired the symposium and the symposium was realized in 2 sessions. Near East University Hospital 153 Emergency Service doctors and trainers of the Turkey Paramedic Association carried out the sympsium together with trainers participated from other universities and health institutions in the TRNC. Following the presentations, the participants had the opportunity to practice with the instructors through the 4 skill stations created especially designed for training purposes. The participation certificates were given to all participants who participated in the symposium and successfully passed from the trainings. 179 health workers participated in the symposium.

Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgen Başgut was appointed as a report-based consultant in Hospital Pharmacy field in Turkey

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgen Başgut, Head of Department of Clinical Pharmacy under Faculty of Pharmacy of Near East University, was reportedly assigned as a report-based consultant in the hospital pharmacy field as part of the Project for Strengthening and Supporting the Health System, which has been carried out by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey. According to the statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, in this project, supported by the World Bank, Dr. Bilgen Başgut will be responsible for the preparation of a report on determining the appropriate local model in the process of making the pharmaceutical advisory centers which will act on rational drug use.
